Siena conference

UDiTE AND UNSCP invites you to join us for our high level conference on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th April 2024 in the magnificent city of Siena in Italy.

Siena is a beautiful historical city, that stands as an iconic symbol of Good Governance, with Ambrogio Lorenzetti's fresco - the Allegory of Good and Bad Government, painted around 1338, and can be admired in the Palazzo Publico in Siena.

Our high level conference will involve eminent academics, senior practitioners and includes input from policy makers from the EU Committee of the Regions and the Council of Europe who will set out the challenges, point to potential solutions and highlight different approaches to good governance if we are to anticipate and take on the leadership challenges our profession will confront in the future.

Local authority leadership is confronted by many economic, social and environmental challenges in the modern world.

The recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the impacts of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, destabilising economies, disrupting supply chains, rising food and fuel costs has generated uncertainties for local authorities across Europe. The challenges of climate change and the ecological transition are challenges we all confront day to day in our communities and in our workplace. Nevertheless, strength in surmounting these challenges comes from our ability to work together and find replicable solutions. Interdependence and not just independence must be reinforced throughout all spheres of governance as the key to us working together and finding innovative solutions with our communities to the challenges we face.

Equally 2024, is going to be a challenging year for local and regional aurthorities in the European Union. Elections in June for the European Parliament has implications the future shape of EU policy and the budgetary scope post 2027 to accompany local authorities on their ecological transition that is fundamental to both 2030 and 2050 targets if we are to rise to the multi pronged challenges that lie before us at the local level.

The UDiTE-UNSCP conference will shine a spotlight on the current situation, offer perspectives on the future and facilitate dialogue and exchange between our members who are responsible for local leadership of authorities and the communities they serve across Europe.  See you in Siena on 19th and 20th April, 2024.
