IUC PUBLISHES BRAND NEW REPORT ON CITY-TO-CITY AND REGION-TO-REGION COOPERATION FOSTERING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ON A GLOBAL SCALE

Last updated: 09 Jul 2020
The IUC uses knowledge-exchange to accelerate sustainable urban development worldwide and to bolster cities’ and regions’ efforts towards achieving international goals (e.g. SDGs and the Paris Agreement), as well as goals set at the local, regional, and national levels. This is done in a manner that is consistent with – and explicitly aligned to support – the EU’s commitment to achieve bi- and multi-lateral policy objectives and major international agreements.

The IUC programme has recently released a publication , which looks back on all that has been accomplished during the programme, with a focus on understanding how city-to-city and region-to-region cooperation can be used to foster and support sustainable urban development and the localisation of global goals .

The publication features good practice examples from 70 IUC pairings spanning 33 countries (including 22 EU Member States) and all IUC regions.

The publication looks at work being done in the IUC programme across six main themes :
   1. Social inclusion and urban regeneration
   2. Circular, sustainable production and consumption
   3. Blue and green infrastructure and management
   4. Climate change adaptation and mitigation
   5. Mobility and transport
   6. Smart cities and innovation

It also explores why urban and regional development must be more sustainable ; how to take sustainable development from planning to action ; and next steps based on what has been learned in the IUC.
