EU and MTV launch new campaign

The European Commission and the satellite television channel MTV have joined forces for a new campaign aimed at encouraging young people to take action on climate change.
The “Play To Stop – Europe for Climate” campaign will run for six months and a series of concerts will be held across the EU to encourage young people to take a greater role in saving the environment.
The campaign, which includes series of live concerts, will culminate in a conference in Copenhagen in December. The aim of the December conference will be to find a new global climate deal to take over the Kyoto Protocol.
The campaign follows a new Europe-wide survey that shows that while young people are aware of climate change, few act against it. The survey found that 51% of 15 to 24-year olds have taken action to combat climate change, which is the lowest proportion of any age range surveyed.
EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas said: "Today's young people will bear the brunt of the impacts of climate change.
“The Copenhagen conference is probably our last chance to tackle climate change before it spirals out of control. There is an enormous desire around the globe for agreement to be reached, and we have to sustain that momentum.”
