The global financial crisis and its impact on Europe’s towns and regions was the focus at the recent Policy Committee of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR).
Concerns were raised over the ongoing struggle facing more and more towns and cities, and discussions were held over possible solutions, which could relieve the situation.
The meeting was held in Paris and the host, the Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoë, called on Europe’s leaders to understand that local and regional authorities can bring solutions. He added that innovative solutions often originated from towns and regions and local and regional authorities were the ‘engine’ that drove economic growth through public investment.
He called for local authorities across Europe to create a databank, which would gather the best ideas in terms of local economic development. Delegates commended his suggestion and the president of CEMR and Mayor of Vienna Michael Häupl added that solutions to the global financial crisis were first and foremost local.
