Informal Education is the topic for the European Award of Excellence "City for Children 2010", which is supported by its patrons the Council of European Municipalities and Regions, the Council of Europe and the Committee of the Regions.

European cities with more than 100,000 residents are invited to apply, and every city may apply with one flagship project, which has already been implemented in the municipality.

According to the European Network Cities for Children, which was initiated by the City of Stuttgart, municipalities play a significant role in education and socialisation of the children and young people in their cities, ranging from early childhood care to extracurricular activities for youth. "Even though the competencies of European municipalities in the formal education system vary from one country to another, municipalities can work towards ensuring that all children and youth have equal chances at attaining a formal eduction," the Network states.

The main aim of the prize is to provide an opportunity to exchange ideas and best practice examples across borders of how to promote the well being of children and young people.

The deadline for applications is 7 December 2009. To find out more please click here
