The European Commission has launched an Action Plan to stimulate cities to develop policies which will help to reach the EU objectives of combating climate change.
The aim is to create an efficient European transport system, which will in turn strengthen social cohesion. According to the European Commission over 70% of the EU population live in an urban area, and nine out of 10 believe traffic where they live needs to be better managed.
The action plan has 20 measures to make urban transport more sustainable and efficient over the next four years. The measures range from improved rights for public transport users to further EU funding for research on zero-emission vehicles.
Local, regional and national authorities are free to use the support on offer, along with the tools that will be made available in the hope that this will help to address the challenge of sustainable urban mobility and facilitate their policy making.
