Internet Safety

According to a former Committee of the Regions rapporteur, local and regional authorities can make a difference in ensuring that the Internet is safe for children.

As more children and young people begin using the Internet and mobile technologies they become vulnerable as they are exposed to greater risks.

Ministers attending a ministerial conference on the importance of cross-national police cooperation in this field are expected to call for increased police cooperation, which could reduce the volume of illegal content on the Internet.

The CoR has stated it is important to remember that local authorities and government are closest to these target groups and have the greatest potential for disseminating information and implementing concrete programmes and projects.

‘We can only succeed in protecting our children if we have the closest possible collaboration between hotlines, law enforcement bodies and internet providers, as well as the involvement of other players including social organisations and NGOs,” said Jan Oravec, former CoR rapporteur.
