EU winter tourism drops

A new study has revealed that the number of nights spent in hotels in the European Union in the 2008/2009 winter season, dropped by 7.2% (-42.6 million nights) compared to the same period in 2007/2008.

The annual report produced by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, has revealed a decline in tourism in all 27 Member States.

The worst affected areas during the winter season have been Middle Eastern countries including Slovakia, Latvia and Lithuania.

However even holiday hotspots such as Spain and Portugal have seen a tourist slump of 15% and 12% respectively.
