European Mobility Week

Local authorities across Europe have been asked to participate in European Mobility Week, which sees cars banned from city and town centres between 16 and 22 September.

Since 2002 town centres across Europe have closed to traffic and opened up solely for people to enjoy walking and cycling, providing an opportunity to promote sustainable travel modes for a week.

Reducing cars during European Mobility Week also enables comparative repairs to be drawn up on air quality, noise pollution and the reduction of motor traffic.

And, according to the United Kingdom's Department for Transport, the objective of European Mobility Week is also to facilitate widespread debate on the necessity for changes in urban travel patterns and in particular the need to cut private car use.
