Local authorities are being invited to apply for new European Development Grants which will allow them to focus on 'Environment and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources' projects.

As well as focusing on three priority areas around environmental sustainability and sustainable energy, activities successfully granted funds must also contribute to poverty reduction.

Local authorities intending to apply must do so before 1 October 2009 and should be aware that the three priority areas include:

• Assist developing countries to achieve the Millennium development Goal (MDG) 7 on environmental sustainability, through building capacity, supporting the involvement of civil society and developing innovative approaches;
• Promoting the implementation of EU initiative and internationally agreed commitments on environment and sustainable management  of natural resources, including resource efficiency, energy at international and regional levels and across national boundaries;
• Support for sustainable energy options in partner countries and regions by support for policy development and through innovative funding mechanisms.

Grants are available under many lots, from desertification and fisheries through to promoting environmental sustainability and forests, and range from €500k - €2.5m.
