Ahead of the Spring summit, European leaders have been handed a 17 point checklist highlighting the positive role local government can play in helping to overcome the current economic crisis.
The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) and the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) handed the list over, which states the public sector has a major impact on employment, which should be taken into account when looking for solutions to the current economic situation.
It also highlights the impact of the crisis on society which results in local and regional authorities taking measures to ensure social stability and to prevent social exclusion.
The statement notes: 'It is relevant to remind that the recovery of the economy cannot happen without well functioning local and regional authorities. The quality of their services depends to a great extent on a qualified, motivated and dedicated workforce. It should therefore be in our common interest to recognise the important role and contribution of the public sector in general and the local and regional government in particular.'
