Renewable Energy Report Backs European Action
Renewable energy report

The Renewables Global Status Report 2009 update, tracking renewable energy investment, deployment and policy developments has provided an interesting overview on city and local government activity on renewable energy.
The report reveals that hundreds of cities worldwide are actively pursuing renewable energy policies as part of their climate strategies.
It backs the contribution of the European Commission, which in 2008 created a 'Covenant of Mayors', as a network of local governments across Europe committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption beyond the EU objective of 20% by 2020. This network grew to almost 500 local governments by April 2009.
The report highlights other local government work across the world, but states: "Europe is among the best examples, where EU policy and national policies have fostered local renewable energy goals and actions, particularly among a number of local governments in Austria, Finland, Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom."
