Local and regional authorities unite

As a result of an October 2008 European Commission communication; local and regional authorities from both the EU and developing countries will come together for the first annual Assises of Decentralised Co-operation.

As a result of an October 2008 European Commission communication; local and regional authorities from both the EU and developing countries will come together for the first annual Assises of Decentralised Co-operation.

The communication entitled Local Authorities: Actors for Development, highlighted the important role that local and regional authorities play in development policy and proposed the establishment of a dialogue on development policy with local authorities.

According to the Committee of the Regions the meeting will focus on how EU local and regional authorities can improve their development co-operation with their counterparts in the developing world, including discussions on particular policy sectors such as energy and health. Among the many high-level participants taking part will be the EU Development Commissioner Karel De Gucht and CoR President Luc Van den Brande.
